What Can We Do? Four Things

Elite Boys Club Syntax

I sometimes feel like the English language is some exclusive boys club, with the sig posted, "No Girlz Allowed!!!" And the design specs of the English language seem to be drafted to favor a portion of our population who are white-skinned, prefer to mate with the opposite gender, and for that purpose have a dangling proboscis that seems to serve as the nexus of this language's design. Imagine language as an automobile, and I'm lifting up the hood to find it's not an engine of syntax and tenses, but instead a 12-year old boy is glaring up at me, and he's angry that I'm interrupting his enjoyment of a porn magazine.   One thing I learned in college is language can be so much more than a male fraternity pledge hazing: with language we can both explore our world, and also create one at the same time.

Respect for the office...

I like how people say if I can't respect the 45, then respect the office of the POTUS. I respond, "Why? You elected Trump as president, knowing full well he was unfit, and you didn't care. How is that respecting the office?"

Who you gonna suck up to?

Ophelia Benson's sharp eyes spotted this gem of information : ProPublica: A trove of internal documents reviewed by ProPublica sheds new light on the secret guidelines that Facebook’s censors use to distinguish between hate speech and legitimate political expression. The documents reveal the rationale behind seemingly inconsistent decisions. For instance, Higgins’ incitement to violence passed muster because it targeted a specific sub-group of Muslims — those that are “radicalized” — while Delgado’s post was deleted for attacking whites in general. Ophelia: "Who ya gonna suck up to? Established power, or rebels? The question answers itself, doesn’t it." Getting a few things off my chest with Photoscape

Ideas tend to build up slowly in my brain until several pour out one day.  One design seems to spark another. Help yourself to these.  And I go, "Oh, yeah, we can do this also..." Distribute freely.  Photoscape (free!) software available here .

Jobs like eager puppies

I keep reading about how there are typically 100 applicants for every one job opening. I don't know how anyone can look at figures like that and assume the unemployed are lazy, rather than victims of a vicious numbers game. I say vicious because far too many corporate business owners are spreading around far too much money to keep it that way. We're not unemployed by some statistical fluke; we're unemployed by design . It's deliberate. I can't help thinking about the early 1980's when computer electronics were taking off. PC's would save the world. Some of the chip foundries and manufacturers were setting up tents in their parking lots and literally hiring people off the streets. All these generous employment benefits you read about today (and wish you had) began in that frenetic time. But then someone, who surely has a special place reserved in Hell, came up with a brilliantly simple solution: set up the hiring tents in developing countries and just forg...

Finally placed register marks to class project

Image
Finally fixed the registration problem with my 1-color band logo on a t-shirt. The design was at an odd angle, so I had to use "real-world" techniques to get it properly oriented. First I printed out the design and aligned on a shirt on our craft-room table. You can see I had the positive aligned at an angle to form an inverted cross made of musical instruments. I marked where the center line and collar line were on the positive. Then I scanned the marked-up positive as an image file (JPEG) using Irfanview. I imported the image file into InDesign (File > Place) and flipped it into position. I placed register markers for the center line and the collar line. Done! *Whew*

Part of the reason I don't like to do formal "brainstorming" on paper; it's already worked out in my head.

The Brick swarm is back

I just love this. It's a fascinating look at what we can achieve in a just a few short years. The concept works. Now it's just a matter of scaling it up.
